What are UTM Parameters?
UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a URL to track marketing performance. Common UTM tags include:
- utm_source – where the traffic came from (e.g., facebook, google)
- utm_medium – the channel type (e.g., paid, email, social)
- utm_campaign – your campaign name
- utm_term – often used for keyword or ad group
- utm_content – used to differentiate creatives or ad variations
These help Google Analytics and other tools understand which campaigns are performing.
What is a UTM Template?
A UTM template is a pre-built format that dynamically pulls campaign information from your ad platform into your URLs. It ensures consistency and saves time.
Ad Platform Templates
Here are dynamic UTM templates for the most common platforms:
Google Ads
Use this as a tracking template in your Google Ads settings:
{lpurl}?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_term={keyword}&utm_content={creative}
Meta (Facebook & Instagram)
This template pulls campaign, ad set, and ad name automatically:
utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=campaign.name&utm_term=adset.name&utm_content=ad.name
Please add two "{" "}" brackets around the campaign, term, and content variables.
TikTok
Use this to dynamically track TikTok ads:
utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=_CAMPAIGN_NAME_
Track Pinterest traffic by campaign and creative:
utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign={campaign_name}&utm_term={adgroup_name}&utm_content={creative_id}
Bing (Microsoft Ads)
Tracking template for Bing (replace {lpurl}
with your URL):
{lpurl}?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign={campaign}&utm_content={AdGroupld}&utm_term={AdGroup}
